North Korea expresses desire for talks with South Korea

North Korea has expressed its desire to resume ‘constructive’ talks with neighboring country South Korea. Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, has said that her country wants to resume talks if South Korea stops promoting its hostile policies and double standards towards North Korea.

Kim Yo Jong’s statement came after the appeal of South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in which he reiterated his demand at the U.N. General Assembly for talks to declare an end to the 1950-53 Korean War. He believes that this can open the way to peace. A ceasefire was called between the two countries at that time, but the peace agreement has not yet been signed.

This statement came just days after North Korea conducted its first missile tests in six months, which some experts believe were meant to demonstrate that the country would continue to build up its weapons arsenal if US-led sanctions remained in place while nuclear diplomacy remained stalled. This is because North Korea considers the military exercises of America and South Korea and the sanctions imposed by the US as a hostile attitude towards itself.
