Nothing to hide or be afraid of: Amit Shah on Adani issue

New Delhi, Feb 14: Union Home minister Amit Shah said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has ‘nothing to hide or be afraid of’ after the Congress accused the ruling party of favouring business tycoon Gautam Adani.

Amit Shah offered a strong defence of the BJP as it is battered by accusations of favouritism and crony capitalism, although maintaining that it would not be appropriate for him to comment on the ongoing dispute following the breakdown of Adani stocks because the subject is still under investigation.

“The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the matter. As a minister, if the Supreme Court is seized of the matter, it is not right for me to comment. But in this, there is nothing for the BJP to hide and nothing to be afraid of,” he said news agency ANI.

The BJP stalwart’s response followed Congressman Rahul Gandhi’s assertion that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election in 2014 was a key factor in Adani’s stratospheric leap from 609th to second place on the world’s wealthiest people list.

Gandhi made a number of accusations, one of which was that PM Modi had assisted Adani in obtaining contracts for work across the globe. The amount of money Adani has donated to the BJP over the past 20 years, including through electoral bonds, was another question he raised.

“Why don’t they go to court? When Pegasus issue was raised, I had said go with proof to court, but they didn’t. They only know how to create noise. Court toh humaare kabze mein nahin hai (The courts are not under our control),” he said.

A political standoff ensued as a united opposition attacked the BJP-led Centre and PM Modi over their alleged connections to the conglomerate’s founder, Gautam Adani, following a report on the business practises of the Adani group by US short-seller firm Hindenburg Research and the subsequent collapse in the conglomerate’s stocks.

The investment made in the Adani group by LIC and other public sector banks has drawn criticism from opposition parties. The government has rejected the allegations.
