Raipur/New Delhi, Sep 29: A “high-profile” thief has been apprehended, a senior Bilaspur Police official, who stated that the dramatic burglary case in Delhi’s Bhogal area “has been solved” in a combined operation between the Delhi and Chhattisgarh police departments.
Sanjay Dhruv, an additional SP in Bilaspur, stated that Delhi Police was attempting to solve the burglary case in which robbers fled with jewels worth around Rs 25 crore earlier this week. He said that Bilaspur was also working to resolve theft cases.
The culprit, according to the police official, resides in Durg, Chhattisgarh, and the district police also had some information on him.
“In a joint operation of Chhattisgarh Police and Delhi Police, a burglary case in a jewellery shop in Delhi has been solved. The accused has been arrested and further investigation is underway. The accused is a high-profile type of thief… We were constantly monitoring his movement and then further action was taken,” Sanjay Dhruv said.
In the case of the theft in Delhi, he said that “jewellery stolen has been recovered.”
There are burglary cases in both Delhi and Bilaspur, the police official claimed, and more action would be taken.
In response to inquiries regarding the suspect, Dhruv stated that the suspect did not commit “small theft crimes” but rather a theft worth around Rs 2 crore in Kawardha, for which the Chhattisgarh police were searching for him.
He said that the Durg Police were also keeping an eye on him since he had been committing major thefts around the nation.
“We had been keeping a close eye. When we got to know about the Rs 25 crore Delhi theft case, we started keeping an eye on him and coordinated with Delhi Police,” Dhruv said.
In a significant break-in that occurred earlier this week in the national capital, burglars ripped a hole in the strong room wall of a store in the Bhogal area and fled with valuables. The owner stated that the store contained “jewellery worth around Rs 20-25 crores.”
It was described as a “big incident of burglary” by Delhi Police, who also stated that they were looking into it.
A raid was conducted in Durg, and a person was taken into custody, said Bilaspur SP Santosh Singh.
“Raid was conducted in Durg in which one person has been arrested. Seven-eight cases of robbery are lodged against him in the Bilaspur Police Station,” he said.
He said that a close associate of the accused was apprehended in Kawardha and that jewels and cash worth Rs. 23 lakh were found in the seizure.
The police official said Rs 12.50 lakh in cash “and over 18kg of gold and diamonds have been seized from the accused which also include items robbed from a jewellery shop in Delhi (in Bhogal)”.
Singh mentioned that a team from the Delhi Police had also arrived at the location.
An interstate group was engaged, the officer stated, and there may be information on further cases.
Two people from Chhattisgarh were arrested, and their interrogation is now proceeding, Delhi Police authorities stated earlier.
The owner of the jewellery store in the Bhogal area, Sanjeev Jain, said that after closing on Sunday, the store was quite dusty when they reopened it on Tuesday. He stated that the CCTV camera was also damaged.
“We closed the shop on Sunday and when we opened it on Tuesday after an off on Monday, we saw that there was dust in the whole shop and there was a hole in the wall of the strong room… We think they (thieves) have looted everything. There was jewellery worth around Rs 20-25 crore. They entered from the terrace. Everything is damaged including CCTV. An investigation is underway,” he said.
A sizable hole in the wall was seen along the stairs in the images from the scene.
The offenders were aware of the jewellery and shop beforehand and were aware of how to enter the strong room, according to sources with the Delhi Police. They said that the robbers were also aware of the electronic equipments.
Police sources stated that the way the burglary was carried out suggests that the burglars had been at the location previously to prepare for their crime.
