Ranchi: A brief spell of rain on Wednesday evening turned Ranchi’s Bara Talab Road into a waterlogged mess, once again highlighting the poor drainage infrastructure in the area. In just under an hour of downpour, the road resembled a pond, trapping several pedestrians and vehicles.
Eyewitnesses reported that knee-deep water accumulated swiftly, and multiple vehicles broke down in the middle of the road. Commuters were seen wading through the water, with bikers getting stuck and needing help from passersby to escape.
Recurring Nightmare, Say Locals
Residents of the area say this is nothing new. “Every time it rains, the same thing happens. Bikes and scooters stall, and the entire road becomes impassable,” said a local shopkeeper.
One side of the road was completely blocked, posing a serious hazard to unaware drivers who could easily get stranded. Multiple two-wheelers sank partially into the water and were manually pulled out.
Drainage System Collapsed
The main culprit remains the dysfunctional drainage system, which locals have been complaining about for years. Despite regular complaints and media coverage, no effective action has been taken. Rainwater has nowhere to drain, causing water to accumulate rapidly.
Public Questions Administration’s Priorities
Angry citizens questioned the municipality’s lack of preparedness and misplaced priorities. While the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) had earlier promised swift response teams during waterlogging incidents, their current focus appears to be entirely on anti-encroachment drives.
Locals complained that the corporation shows no concern for the public’s difficulty during flooding, and that officials only offer empty assurances year after year. Residents and shopkeepers alike are calling for a permanent solution to the drainage crisis, not just lip service.
