Over 10,000 Children in India living on streets with families: Centre

New Delhi, Feb 11: The women and children department(WCD)  said on Friday that over 10,000 children are living on the streets with their families in the country.

Smriti Irani Women and Child Development Minister, while answering the question in Lok Sabha provided data from the Bal Swaraj portal, which enumerates children living in street situations in the country.

According to the data, there are 19,546 children in street situations in the country, out of which 10,401 children are living with their families on the streets, while 8,263 children stay on the streets during the day and are back home the night with their families who reside in nearby slums.

The statistics show that there are 19,546 children living on the streets in the nation; 10,401 of these youngsters live there with their families, and 8,263 spend the day on the streets and spend the night with their family in adjacent slums.

The results showed that 882 youngsters without help are living on the streets by themselves.

Earlier, in a reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, WCD Minister Smriti Irani said on Wednesday there is no waiting period for those who desire to adopt a child having special needs and also from the immediate placement category which includes mostly older children.

Also, in responding to another question, Irani said 76,118 Children in Need of Care and Protection(CNCP) are residing in 2,245 Child Care Institutions (CCIs) including government institutions funded under Mission Vatsalya Scheme in the country.
