Islamabad, Sept 1: Imran Khan’s pre-arrest bond was extended by a Pakistani court on Thursday for an additional two weeks on terrorism-related allegations stemming from a speech, according to his lawyer. Khan had previously appeared in court under heavy security.
“It is not at all a case of terrorism,” Faisal Chaudhry, the lawyer told Reuters.
He stated that the bond was approved till September 12. On August 31, the pre-arrest bail ran out.
Khan is accused of making threats against the chief of police in Islamabad and a female judge after he talked about how the police had tortured a colleague who is now being charged with sedition for allegedly instigating a mutiny in the military.
As Khan mobilises support for elections that are not scheduled until October of next year, political tensions in Pakistan remain high. Khan has refuted accusations that he threatened the authorities, claiming that his statements were misconstrued.
