Islamabad, April 3: Pakistan President Arif Alvi dissolves National Assembly on the advice of Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday, just minutes after the embattled leader of the ruling party recommended him to schedule new elections.

Farrukh Habib, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, said President Alvi dissolved the National Assembly on the prime minister’s advice. He stated that the election would take place within 90 days.

The Cabinet has been disbanded, according to Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry.

Prime Minister Khan, who had virtually lost his majority in the 342-member National Assembly, had earlier delivered a brief speech to the country following Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri’s adjournment of a tumultuous parliament session.

Khan commended the country on the defeat of the no-trust motion, stating that the deputy speaker had “rejected the attempt to change the regime and the international plot.”
