Ranchi, Feb.20: Jharkhand police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the volunteers working for Panchayat Secretary near Raj Bhavan when they were agitating for their three-point charter of demands.
The demands included provision of payment of honorarium instead of incentive amount, converting Panchayat Swyamsevak into Panchayat Sahayak and extending the age of service till 60 years.
The development took place in the evening after they started raising slogans for fulfillment of their demand and were not ready to leave the spot despite the warning of police to not do so.
Many volunteers including men and women sustained injuries on their hands, feet and forehead in the police action. All the injured were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Earlier Panchayat secretary volunteers, while marching from Morahabadi Maidan to Raj Bhavan, raised slogans against the state government.
“Government is not listening to our demands. All the people working in the panchayat are local. Despite this, our demands are not being fulfilled. We gave written applications to fulfill our demands. Despite this, no one paid attention to our demands. The Hemant Soren government is trying to cheat us. Ever since the government was formed, it has been ignoring our demands,” an agitating volunteer was heard saying.
