New Delhi, Oct 27: A parliamentary committee that was looking into three bills to replace the current criminal laws did not adopt its draft report on Friday as planned, citing opposition members’ demand that they needed more time to review it.
The Standing Committee’s next meeting is scheduled for November 6, 2023.
According to sources, certain opposition members, such as P Chidambaram from the Congress party, wrote to the committee’s chairperson Brij Lal, requesting an extension for a thorough review of the draft report and to submit their opinions, as the report involves three distinct bills.
Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha during the monsoon session to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 with Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, respectively. The goal of these bills is to completely overhaul the criminal laws from the colonial era.
The bills were subsequently forwarded to the committee by the House for scrutiny.
