Passenger Dies as Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express Derails in Uttar Pradesh

Rescue Operations Underway Following Train Accident in Gonda District

Gonda, UP: One passenger has died and two others have been injured after 12 coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district today. The accident occurred in Pikaura, between Gonda and Jhilahi. The train, numbered 15904, was en route to Dibrugarh in Assam from Chandigarh when the derailment happened.

The incident saw four AC coaches derail just a few kilometers before reaching Jhilahi railway station. Visuals from the site show passengers standing beside the tracks with their luggage, some visibly shaken but relieved to have escaped harm. “I had a close shave, glad to be safe. Don’t worry I am fine,” one passenger shared.

Rescue teams have been dispatched to the site to conduct relief operations, and the railway medical van has arrived to assist the injured. Videos from the scene depict passengers retrieving their belongings from the derailed coaches, with one coach flipped onto its side and some passengers standing atop it.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been briefed on the accident, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office released a statement saying, “Taking cognizance of the train accident in Gonda district, the Chief Minister has directed district administration officials to reach the spot and expedite relief work. The officials have been instructed to immediately take the injured to the hospital and provide them with proper treatment. The Chief Minister wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

The Congress party expressed its condolences and urged its workers to assist in the relief efforts. “Sad news is coming from Gonda, UP. Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed. People are reported dead and injured in this tragic accident. May God give peace to the departed souls and speedy recovery to the injured,” Congress posted on X.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the derailment while ensuring that relief operations proceed swiftly to aid affected passengers.
