New Delhi, July 10: In the wake of severe rainfall in some areas of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with ministers and government representatives on Monday to assess the situation.

Assistance is being provided to those affected by rain by both the national and state disaster response teams.

“PM @narendramodi spoke to senior Ministers and officials, and took stock of the situation in the wake of excessive rainfall in parts of India. Local administrations, NDRF and SDRF teams are working to ensure the well-being of those affected,” PMO said in a tweet.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday forecast that rainfall activity will continue over Northwest India, but that the intensity of showers may vary, despite the country-wide heavy rains.

In Himachal Pradesh, rain-related incidents have claimed the lives of around 14 individuals.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, made a plea to the state residents on Monday to stay inside for the ensuing 24 hours due to the likelihood of very heavy rainfall in the region.

He released three helpline numbers for those who are in need of assistance: 1100, 1070, and 1077.

Delhi experienced heavy rainfall on Saturday and Sunday that surpassed a 41-year record, waterlogging several areas.

Due to Delhi’s rising water level, NDRF authorities stated that personnel at its Ghaziabad centre were prepared to handle any unforeseen crisis.

In Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and East Rajasthan, there is a risk of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days, said Dr Charan Singh, Head of the Regional Meteorology Centre here.

“If we speak about Northwest India, especially the mountains then all the Himalayan regions especially Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will witness extremely heavy rainfall for the next two days and after that, the intensity of rainfall will decrease, but heavy rainfall will continue to occur. If we speak about Jammu and Kashmir, there are chances of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours and after that of heavy rainfall”, Singh had said.

“As far as Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and East Rajasthan are concerned, there are chances of heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next two days, but the intensity will decrease after two days. Rainfall activity will continue to occur over northwest India,” he added.
