Ranchi: Following the demise of former Jharkhand Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Shibu Soren, significant political changes are expected in the state. The reconstitution of the State Coordination Committee and a by-election for a vacant Rajya Sabha seat are now inevitable.

Vacuum in Coordination Committee Leadership

Shibu Soren had been heading the Coordination Committee formed in 2022. Its members include Rajya Sabha MP Sarfaraz Ahmad, Jharkhand Congress president Keshav Mahato Kamlesh, former president Rajesh Thakur, former minister Satyanand Bhokta, Bandhu Tirkey, JMM general secretary Vinod Pandey, and senior leader Fagu Besra.

With Soren’s passing, the committee is left without a leader, making its reconstitution urgent. Moreover, the committee’s term ends on 25 November 2025, further emphasizing the need for an immediate overhaul.

Rajya Sabha By-election Within Six Months

Shibu Soren’s demise has created a vacancy in one of Jharkhand’s Rajya Sabha seats. As per constitutional provisions, a by-election must be held within six months to fill the seat.

Soren and BJP leader Deepak Prakash were elected to the Rajya Sabha on 22 June 2020, with terms ending on 21 June 2026. Now, with the seat vacated a year in advance, the Election Commission is required to conduct a by-election promptly.

JMM Faces Dual Leadership and Electoral Challenge

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and its alliance partners face a dual challenge—choosing a new leader for the Coordination Committee and selecting a suitable candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-election.

This political shift marks a critical juncture for the ruling coalition as it prepares for transitions in both leadership and legislative representation.
