New Delhi, August 29: President Droupadi Murmu offered greetings to the people of Kerala on the occasion of Onam on Tuesday, adding that we should use this occasion to thank nature for her innumerable blessings.
Taking to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Rashtrapati Bhavan said, “Greetings to all fellow citizens and our brothers and sisters in Kerala on Onam! On this auspicious occasion we express our gratitude to Mother nature for the countless bounties. May this harvest festival usher in prosperity and the spirit of harmony among all.”

PM Modi also extended greetings by posting on X, “Onam greetings to everyone! May your lives be showered with good health, unparalleled joy and immense prosperity. Over the last many years, Onam has become a global festival and it beautifully showcases the vibrant culture of Kerala.”

The ten-day celebrations known as Thiru-Onam or Thiruvonam, which commemorate the return of the venerable King Mahabali, also known as Maveli, are filled with excitement and joy.
Kerala’s rich heritage and cultural magnificence are symbolised by this lively celebration.
On August 20 with the Atham celebrations, Kerala’s 10-day Onam festival officially began. Vamana and King Mahabali are honoured at this event.
People started constructing floral carpets (Pookkalam) in front of their residences and establishments to welcome Mahabali. People typically wear traditional kasavu saris and mundu (dhoti) during the Onam celebration. It is a time when friends and family get together and exchange gifts, such as new outfits.
The preparation of Onasadya, a unique vegetarian feast, is one of the highlights of the Onam celebrations. On this occasion, people cook unusual food dishes at home and give them to others.
Chingam, the first month of the Malayalam calendar, is when Onam is celebrated. It’s time to celebrate the harvest.
Onam is commemorated in Kerala to honour the excellent leadership provided by daitya monarch Mahabali, a mythical king who formerly ruled Kerala.
The devas and gods allegedly plotted to overthrow Mahabali’s kingship because they were envious of his influence and popularity. They despatched Mahabali to the patala (netherworld) by sending Vamana to Earth as a dwarf Brahmin.
This is a significant occasion for merchants as well. People spend money on purchases. Shops also offer large discounts to attract clients. Kerala is celebrating for the next ten days.
Women wearing traditional saris create floral carpets. They come together and celebrate the event by singing a well-known song.
