New Delhi: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi on Friday fiercely defended her brother Rahul Gandhi against BJP MP Sambit Patra’s accusation labeling him a “traitor of the highest order.” Priyanka asserted that Rahul Gandhi’s commitment to the country is unparalleled and accused the BJP of resorting to baseless attacks to divert attention from pressing issues.

Speaking during a media interaction, Priyanka said, “Those who could call Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi traitors are now targeting Rahul Gandhi. There is nothing new in it. I am proud of my brother. For him, nothing is above this country. He walked 4,000 kilometers from Kanniyakumari to Kashmir to uphold the unity of this nation. They lack the courage to discuss the Adani issue, so they stoop to such baseless accusations.”

Sambit Patra’s controversial remarks came during a press conference on Thursday, where he alleged that Rahul Gandhi was part of a “dangerous triangle” involving billionaire George Soros and the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), with the intent to destabilize India.

Patra said, “On one side is George Soros from America with some agencies, on the other is the OCCRP, and the last and most important side is Rahul Gandhi—a traitor of the highest order. I am not scared to use this word.”

The BJP leader accused Rahul of working under OCCRP directives and claimed that the agency is funded by Soros’s Open Society Foundation, which, according to him, works for the interests of its financiers.

The Congress countered these allegations, with MP Hibi Eden filing a notice for a privilege motion against Patra. In his letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Eden stated, “The usage of such defamatory and unparliamentary language against the leader of the opposition has violated constitutional norms. I urge the Speaker to take action against Sambit Patra.”

The remarks have sparked a political row, with Congress demanding accountability and the BJP doubling down on its criticism of the opposition leader.
