New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India by the end of 2025, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval confirmed on Thursday. The visit gains significance as it comes amid US-imposed tariffs on India over Russian oil imports and growing geopolitical strain.
High-Level Diplomatic Engagements Strengthen Ties
Ajit Doval expressed enthusiasm over the upcoming visit, stating that India and Russia share a long-standing, strategic partnership. He noted that dates for the visit are almost finalized, adding that such high-level engagements have always contributed substantially to bilateral relations.
Kremlin Defends India’s Trade Sovereignty
Responding to criticism from the US, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov defended India’s right to choose its own trade partners. He condemned external pressure to sever ties with Russia as “illegitimate.” This came after US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian exports and hinted that China could face similar measures.
Putin-Trump Meeting Likely Next Week
Amid rising tensions, a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin is expected as early as next week. The conversation is likely to address the ongoing Ukraine war and the escalating tariff conflict, as Trump pursues an aggressive trade strategy while calling for a resolution to the crisis.
