Lucknow: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi visited Fatehpur (Rae Bareli) on Friday to meet the family of Hariom Valmiki, a Dalit youth who was brutally beaten to death on October 2. Expressing deep condolences, Gandhi assured the family of his support in their fight for justice.
Condemnation of Atrocity and Government Response
Gandhi compared the incident to a recent case in Haryana where a Dalit officer died by suicide, stressing that atrocities against Dalits are occurring nationwide. He said the Valmiki family committed no crime and that the murder was a “heinous crime against humanity and the Constitution.” Gandhi accused the authorities of creating an atmosphere that treats victims like criminals, noting that the family has been confined to their home and intimidated. He highlighted that a girl in the family cannot undergo a necessary surgery because the government is not allowing them to leave.
Call for Justice and Political Statement
Gandhi demanded that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ensure justice and dignity for the family, and that the accused face strict action. He also alleged that government officials threatened the family, instructing them to say they did not wish to meet him. Gandhi reiterated his commitment to supporting Dalit families wherever atrocities occur, saying the Congress party will stand firmly with victims and fight for justice.
