New Delhi: Delhi witnessed a sudden change in weather on Thursday as heavy rain and dust storms brought much-needed relief from the soaring temperatures. The capital, which recorded its warmest night of the season on Wednesday, saw a significant dip in temperature, making the atmosphere pleasant for residents.
Warmest Night In Three Years
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi recorded its minimum temperature at 25.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday night — nearly six degrees above normal. This was the highest minimum temperature recorded in April in the last three years.
In comparison, April 2024 had a maximum minimum temperature of 24 degrees Celsius, and April 2023 recorded 23.6 degrees Celsius. The highest minimum temperature for April in recent years was seen in 2022 at 26.2 degrees Celsius.
Maximum Temperature To Reach 39 Degrees Celsius
Despite the dip in temperature, the IMD has predicted that the maximum temperature could climb to around 39 degrees Celsius during the day. Different parts of Delhi witnessed varying weather conditions, with some areas experiencing “warm” to “very warm” night conditions.
What Defines A ‘Warm Night’
As per the IMD, a “warm night” occurs when the maximum temperature stays at or above 40 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature remains 4.5 to 6.4 degrees Celsius above the normal range.
A “very warm night” is classified when the minimum temperature exceeds the normal by more than 6.4 degrees Celsius.
Delhi’s Air Quality Remains ‘Poor’
While the weather offered respite from the heat, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 243 at 9 am, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data.
The AQI categorization is as follows:
