Chennai, Dec.24: Nalini Sriharan, one of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, would be released on one-month parole today after completing paperwork, according to Nalini’s lawyer Radhakrishnan.

Radhakrishnan said, “Nalini, who was granted (parole) by the state government on Thursday, will be released on Friday after completing surety formalities.”

After numerous appeals from her ailing mother Padma, the Tamil Nadu government informed the Madras High Court on Thursday that Nalini has been granted a month’s parole.

Nalini will now live with her mother in a leased house in Satuvachery, Vellore, under close police surveillance. They will be accompanied by their sister Kalyani and brother Bakianathan.

Nalini and six others were sentenced to life in prison in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Nalini has been serving a jail term for more than two decades.

In February of last year, the Tamil Nadu government informed the Madras High Court that the state administration had recommended to the Governor that all seven inmates in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case be released.

Nalini’s husband Murugan, Suthinthira Raja alias Santhan, AG Perarivalan, Robert Pais, Jayakumar, and Ravichandran are among the other defendants in the case. Sriharan, Santhan, Robert Pais, and Jayakumar are all Sri Lankan nationals.

Rajiv Gandhi was slain by a suicide bomber from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, in May 1991. A total of 14 persons were killed in the attack.
