New Delhi, Sep 18: The panel of vice-chairpersons has been reconstituted with 50% women parliamentarians, Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar announced on Monday, and the number may rise in the future.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs Kanta Kardam, Sumitra Balmik and Geeta alias Chandraprabha as well as Mamata Mohanta of the Biju Janata Dal, would now make up four women members of the eight members of the panel.
On the first day of the Parliament’s Special Session, Dhankhar made this announcement in the Upper House.
“The House members are informed that the panel of vice-chairpersons has been reconstituted with effect from September 13, 2023. Honourable members will be happy to note that 50% of the vice chairpersons happen to be women,” said Dhankhar.
The Chairman announced the names of the new panel of vice chairpersons, 50% of whom are female MPs, and added that there may be more female MPs on the panel in the future.
In the absence of the chairman or deputy chairman, the vice chairpersons are qualified to lead the house.
Akhilesh Prasad Singh of the Congress, Narain Dass Gupta of the Aam Aadmi Party, V Vijayasai Reddy of the YSRCP and Santanu Sen of the Trinamool Congress were named as other members of the panel.
