Ranchi: In Ranchi, those flouting traffic rules are facing strict consequences. Between January and March 2025, the driving licenses of 982 people were suspended due to violations of traffic regulations. The most common offenders were those caught riding without helmets or driving under the influence of alcohol.
January Sees Maximum Suspensions
In January alone, 473 licenses were suspended. Among these:
185 people were caught driving under the influence, 73 were without helmets, And several were operating vehicles without permits.
February and March Statistics
In February, 243 licenses were revoked, of which:
203 cases were related to drunken driving or rash driving, Others were penalized for not wearing seat belts or helmets.
In March, 266 licenses were suspended. The most alarming fact is that 334 people were caught driving under influence or dangerously, while 26 licenses were suspended for not wearing helmets.

Now, it’s not just about paying a fine — licenses are being directly suspended. According to the DTO, there will be zero tolerance for negligence going forward.
Road Accidents: A Grim Reality
Between January and March 2025, 226 road accidents occurred in Ranchi, claiming 164 lives — that’s almost one death every two days.
Dhurwa police station area recorded the highest number of accidents with 17 cases and 11 deaths. Other affected areas include Namkum, Tamar, and Ratu.
Monthly Breakdown:
January: 73 accidents | 45 deaths
February: 71 accidents | 60 deaths
March: 82 accidents | 59 deaths
In total, 283 people were affected:
148 sustained serious injuries 63 had minor injuries
Rural vs Urban: Rural Roads More Dangerous
Out of the total:
152 accidents occurred in rural areas, causing 128 deaths 74 accidents took place in urban areas, with 36 fatalities
This highlights the worsening condition of rural roads in the district.
Despite Risk, New Drivers on the Rise
Surprisingly, during the same three-month period, 7,193 new driving licenses were issued:
6,023 to men 1,168 to women 2 to transgender individuals
While more people are learning to drive, traffic rule violations continue unchecked, resulting in avoidable tragedies.
