Ranchi, Aug 10: Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University on Wednesday organised a lecture on the topic ‘Education is not learning of facts but the training of mind to think’ under its Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav lecture series.
The guest speaker on the occasion was Prof Dr M H Ansari, former HoD, PG Department of Rural Management, XISS.
Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Tapan Kumar Shandilya said, “The topic was selected to explain to students that just attending classes and writing down notes is not enough. They need a method to improve their thinking and analytical power. Even the government through NEP plans to improve this. This is also the first education policy after Independence that has been developed keeping in mind the country and its diversity.”
“Dr Ansari even used Magahi language to make the session interactive. He used a friendly manner with students to explain to them and urged them to think. He taught the children to exercise their minds and rethink to improve their way of thinking,” the VC added.
Connecting the topic with the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Dr Ansari explained the ideas of education, learning and training of the mind. He further explained their importance and differentiated between the same with examples.
Dr Ansari said, “Education makes an individual a complete MAN, wherein the extended meaning is someone who has Morality, Ability and Nobility.” He further added that critical thinking is the art of analysing and evaluating thinking.
Dr Ansari, during the lecture also suggested that students follow their passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice, and not let anyone limit their dreams. He also gave away the mantra of RRA (Reflection, Realisation and Actualisation) and urged the students to use it in every walk of life.
Those present on the occasion were Dr Rajesh Singh, PRO; Dr Anil Kumar, DSW; Dr Kamini Kumari, Coordinator, Commerce department; and I N Sahu, Assistant Coordinator, Commerce along with several other professors and students of the commerce department.
Notably, the university plans to further organise similar lectures throughout the month to help students understand and implement the ideas behind NEP in a better manner.
