New Delhi, Nov.25: Reddit has announced that it would shut down video site Dubsmash on February 22, 2022, just over a year after purchasing it for an undisclosed sum.
Reddit had intended to preserve Dubsmash, a TikTok-like platform and brand, as a distinct platform and brand, but that looks to have been abandoned. The firm said that services for the platform would be discontinued next year, and that the app would no longer be accessible for download on the Google Play Store or the App Store after February 22.
“Since joining, the Dubsmash team has been working to integrate their innovative video creation tools into Reddit,” the company wrote in a blog post.
“With a goal of empowering Reddit’s own creators to express themselves in original ways that are authentic to our communities.”
The Dubsmash team will transition to the Reddit app, where they will continue to integrate video capabilities and create new experiences. Users of Dubsmash can still connect in the r/dubsmash community.
The option to modify recording speeds on the built-in camera, set timers, support for landscape, portrait, and fill films, and more are among the new capabilities coming to the Reddit mobile app as a result of the merger.
Support for text stickers, a drawing tool, additional filters, voice-over support, volume balancing, and the ability to cut and edit clips will all be added to the editing suite.
The Reddit app for iOS and Android already has these additional capabilities, with more to come in the future.
