New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. This marks a significant political shift after the BJP ended the 10-year rule of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the recently concluded assembly elections.

The decision was finalized during a meeting of the BJP legislature party on Wednesday evening. With this appointment, Delhi will once again have a woman Chief Minister after over two decades.

Formal Announcement by Delhi BJP

The Delhi BJP officially announced the decision through a post on X, extending congratulations to Rekha Gupta.

“Hearty congratulations and best wishes to Mrs. Rekha Gupta on being elected as the leader of the Delhi BJP Legislative Party. We have full faith that the state will progress under your leadership,” the post stated.

Following the meeting, BJP legislators proceeded to the Lieutenant Governor’s residence, where Rekha Gupta formally staked her claim to form the government. Sources indicate that she will lead a six-member council.

Delhi’s Political Landscape

Rekha Gupta’s appointment makes her the first woman Chief Minister of Delhi since Sushma Swaraj, who served for 52 days in 1998. She succeeds AAP’s Atishi, who took charge after Arvind Kejriwal’s tenure.

Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who held the post for three consecutive terms under the Congress, remains the longest-serving woman leader in the capital’s history.

Congratulatory Messages

Outgoing Chief Minister Atishi extended her congratulations to Rekha Gupta and offered her assistance if needed.

Women leaders from across the BJP, including Alka Lamba and Kiran Bedi, also conveyed their best wishes to the new Chief Minister.
