Ranchi, Mar 10: To keep the kidney healthy, regular exercise, avoidance of unnecessary medicines, keeping high blood pressure (BP) and diabetes under control, controlling weight and leaving the habit of smoking are important said, Dr Pragya Pant.

An awareness programme was organised on the occasion of World Kidney Day in the Nephrology Department of Super Specialty Block of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, (RIMS) Ranchi.

Dr Pragya Pant, Assistant Professor, Department of Nephrology explained the importance of kidneys and the diseases associated with them to the patients and their accompanying family members. Along with this, Dr Pragya also explained the ways to avoid these diseases and said that kidneys can be kept healthy by following a good lifestyle.

Dr Pragya said, “Dialysis is not required for every kidney disease. Some changes in your routine along with medicines, adopting a healthy lifestyle can also control kidney disease.”

Worldwide, 1 out of every 10 adults suffers from chronic kidney disease. Kidney disease-related mortality is increasing annually and is projected to be the 5th leading cause of death by 2040. In such a situation, dialysis or kidney transplantation are considered better options for treatment. But many patients lose their lives while waiting for kidney transplants. In such a situation, the importance of organ donation was also explained during the program.

Dr Rajeev Ranjan, Nodal Officer, State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation, while highlighting the importance of organ donation, inspired people to take a pledge for organ donation.

Dr Ranjan said, “just as living people donate kidneys to save their loved ones, in the same way, a dead person by donating his organ can help the society by giving new life to eight people.”

World Kidney Day is celebrated every year around the world on the second Thursday of March. The main objective of celebrating this day is to promote awareness about the importance of kidneys and the effects of kidney disease and its associated health problems. This year the theme of World Kidney Day 2022 was ‘Kidney Health for All’.
