New Delhi: The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is preparing to move the Supreme Court against the recently enacted Waqf Amendment Act, 2025. RJD MP Manoj Jha and senior leader Fayaz Ahmed will file the petition on behalf of the party, arguing that the new law poses serious implications for the management and governance of Waqf properties.
According to ANI, the RJD leaders are set to approach the apex court on Sunday. Their move follows similar petitions filed by opposition parties including the Congress, AIMIM, and AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan, all of whom have voiced strong opposition to the legislation.
Tejashwi Yadav’s Stand
RJD leader and former deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav has called the law a political tool aimed at diverting public attention from pressing issues such as unemployment. Speaking to reporters, Yadav stated, “The Waqf Act will be thrown into the dustbin if RJD forms the government in Bihar after the elections.”
He further expressed concern that the law could eventually be used to target other minority communities. “Today Muslims are being targeted, tomorrow it could be Sikhs and Christians,” he said.
Yadav criticized the JD(U), accusing it of misleading the public about the bill’s benefits. He claimed that Muslim leaders in JD(U) were being coerced into defending the Act, calling a recent press conference a “fiasco.”
Protests in Bihar
The bill has sparked widespread protests in Bihar. Earlier in March, the Bihar Legislative Assembly saw disruptions as opposition parties demanded the bill’s withdrawal and advocated for full implementation of the Sachar Committee recommendations to uplift the Muslim community.
RJD chief Lalu Prasad and Tejashwi Yadav both expressed solidarity with the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), which has also demanded that the law be repealed. Speaking at an AIMPLB gathering, Tejashwi said, “We believe in your cause. Our party had presented the same views before the Joint Parliamentary Committee when it came to Bihar. We will fight till this undemocratic and unconstitutional legislation is rolled back.”
His reference to the “Nagpuriya” nature of the bill was a nod to the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of the BJP.
