Tokyo: Japan made history on Tuesday as Sanae Takaichi was elected the country’s first-ever female prime minister after securing a decisive victory in parliament. Takaichi, known for her strong nationalist and conservative views, won 237 votes in the 465-seat Lower House — eliminating the need for a runoff. Her election, backed by a coalition between the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), ended months of political uncertainty following former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s resignation.
Historic Win and Coalition Support
Following a weekend agreement between the ruling LDP and JIP, Takaichi’s elevation marks a major political milestone in Japan’s history. Her predecessor, Shigeru Ishiba, stepped down after just a year in office due to the LDP’s poor showing in the July elections. Addressing supporters after the parliamentary vote, Takaichi said, “Political stability is essential right now. Without stability, we cannot push measures for a strong economy or diplomacy.” Stock markets reacted positively to her appointment, signaling optimism over her economic policies.
Conservative Ideology and ‘China Hawk’ Reputation
Often described as a “China hawk,” Takaichi has drawn both praise and criticism for her uncompromising stance on national security. A protégé of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, she supports strengthening Japan’s military capabilities and revising the pacifist constitution. Her views are conservative — she backs male-only imperial succession, opposes same-sex marriage, and rejects proposals allowing married couples to use separate surnames. Admirers call her Japan’s “Iron Lady,” likening her to Margaret Thatcher, while critics have dubbed her “Taliban Takaichi” for her rigid positions.
Domestic and International Outlook
Takaichi is expected to form a Cabinet comprising allies of LDP heavyweight Taro Aso and other senior party members. Analysts say her leadership could redefine Japan’s defense and foreign policies, especially amid rising tensions with China and North Korea. However, her frequent visits to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine — seen by neighbors as a symbol of Japan’s wartime past — may strain diplomatic ties.
PM Modi Congratulates Japan’s New Leader
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Takaichi on her historic election and expressed optimism about deepening India–Japan ties. “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Sanae Takaichi upon her appointment as Prime Minister of Japan. I look forward to working closely together to further evolve the special strategic global partnership between our two nations,” Modi wrote on X, emphasizing Japan’s vital role in ensuring peace and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific.
