Siwan: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, campaigning in Siwan ahead of Bihar’s first-phase voting on November 6, stirred controversy by likening local RJD candidate Osama Shahab (without naming him directly) to Osama bin Laden and vowing to “eliminate every Osama” one by one, drawing sharp attention to his combative rhetoric.
Controversial Comparison
Sarma, speaking at a public meeting in Raghunathpur, said India is the land of Ram and Sita and would never accept the dominance of anyone like Osama bin Laden. He recounted being told Raghunathpur would show him images of Ram, Sita and Lakshman — but that “Osama” was also present, prompting his remark that such figures must be removed. He prefaced his Hindi by noting it was imperfect but pressed on with his points.
Election Context and Fallout
The CM also referenced the name Shahnabuddin and accused such figures of violent crimes, warning against allowing “infiltrators” to vote. His speech — delivered on the final day of campaigning for the first phase — adds to rising tensions in Bihar’s heated election atmosphere and is likely to provoke reactions from opposition parties and civil society over communal and law-and-order implications.
