New Delhi, Aug 23: Baba Ramdev was questioned by the Supreme Court on Tuesday on his attempt to disparage allopathy and its practising physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Justices Hima Kohli, CT Ravikumar, and NV Ramana, the Chief Justice of India, said in a ruling:

“Why is Baba Ramdev accusing doctors allopathy etc? He popularised yoga. Good. But he should not criticize other systems. What is the guarantee that what he follows will cure everything?…Why is Baba Ramdev abusing the system like this?”

The Indian Medical Association (IMA), represented by Advocate-on-Record Amarjeet Singh, has filed a petition with the court, alleging a smear campaign against the COVID-19 immunisation push and modern medicine.

“The kind of disparaging statements made and the public is being misguided. We made representations, and no answer. Government also knows about such misleading ads by Ayush companies etc…They say that doctors were taking allopathy, but still succumbing during the COVID wave. If this happens unbated, then it will cause serious prejudice to us,” appearing for the IMA, Advocate Prabhas Bajaj argued.

The Court proceeded to issue notice to the Central government.

Ramdev was seen saying in a video last year, during the second Covid wave that ravaged the nation and killed thousands of people, “Lakhs of people have perished because of allopathic drugs, considerably more than those who died because they did not get treatment or oxygen.” Even more allegedly, the yoga instructor referred to allopathy as a “stupid and bankrupt” science.

Additionally, he asserted that numerous doctors in India perished despite receiving the recommended two doses of the coronavirus vaccine.

In a previous press release, the IMA said that the Union Health Ministry should take legal action and charge Ramdev with violating the Epidemic Diseases Act since he had misled the public with “unlearned” claims and denigrated modern medicine.
