New Delhi, July 3: The Supreme Court demanded a thorough status report from the state government on the steps taken to stop ethnic violence in Manipur after expressing concern about the state’s law and order situation.
The Supreme Court asked the government to provide a list of the actions taken to establish rehabilitation facilities for those who are homeless or have been victims of violence, as well as the deployment of forces and the state of law and order in Manipur.
The Supreme Court was informed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on behalf of the Central Government and the Manipur State Government that the state’s position is slowly but surely improving. He stated that in addition to the civil police, there are Manipur rifles, CAPF companies, 114 Army columns and Manipur Commandos.
The Manipur government has been instructed to submit the report by July 10 in order for the Supreme Court’s bench, which is led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, to hear the case again.
In one of the petitions being heard by the court on the violence in Manipur, an NGO asked for Army protection for the minority Kuki tribal people and action against groups that were allegedly targeting them.
The Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur have been engaged in ethnic conflict since May 3; almost 120 people have died and more than 3,000 have been injured. The majority of Meiteis, who make up around 53% of Manipur’s population, reside in the Imphal Valley. Another 40% of the population is made up of the Naga and Kuki tribes, who live in the hill districts.
