New Delhi, Aug 16: The Central Government on Tuesday mentioned before the Supreme Court the matter relating to the suspension of All India Football Federation (AIFF) by FIFA.

Before a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta stated that ‘some development’ has occurred about AIFF and asked that the case be heard tomorrow.

The SG informed the bench that he would distribute the FIFA press release even if he did not specifically mention the suspension of AIFF so that the bench would be aware of the development. The apex court will hear the matter tomorrow.

Notably, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) was suspended by FIFA on August 15 as a result of improper interference from third parties, which FIFA describes as a “severe violation of the FIFA Statutes.”

India’s hopes of hosting the U17 Women’s World Cup in October have also been severely harmed by FIFA’s suspension of AIFF. In a statement, FIFA claimed that India ‘cannot’ now host the competition but added that it is actively pursuing a favourable resolution with the Sports Ministry.
