New Delhi, Nov 14: The Supreme Court on Monday consented to hear an appeal contesting the Union Government’s most recent announcement authorising the sale of a new batch of electoral bonds for the assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

In order to be listed urgently, the plea was discussed before Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. The attorney requested an expedited listing, claiming that the sale of electoral bonds would shortly be completed.

“We will list it before the appropriate Bench”, CJI Chandrachud said the lawyer.

“But, they are issuing…against the scheme. It will get over”, the counsel pressed.

“We will list the matter”, CJI assured.

The selling of electoral bonds is permitted from November 9 through November 15, according to the announcement.

It should be emphasised that the Finance Act of 2017’s provisions, which allowed for anonymous electoral bonds, are being challenged in a small number of Supreme Court cases. Those petitions had been postponed to December 6 by a bench made up of Justices BR Gavai and BV Nagarathna on October 14.

A request to halt the sale of electoral bonds ahead of some states’ assembly elections was denied by the Supreme Court in March 2021.
