Mumbai: Shaina NC, a well-known face in Indian politics and fashion, officially joined the Shiv Sena, led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, on Monday. Her candidacy for the Mumbadevi seat in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly election places her in a contest against the sitting Congress MLA, Amin Patel. Shaina NC’s shift from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to Shiv Sena comes just weeks before the election.
Here are five things to know about Shaina NC, the Shiv Sena’s Mumbadevi candidate:
1. Known as the ‘Queen of Drapes’
Shaina NC, daughter of former Sheriff of Mumbai Nana Chudasama, is a distinguished figure in Indian fashion, known as the ‘Queen of Drapes’ for mastering 54 different saree draping styles. She even holds a Guinness World Record for the fastest saree draping, recognized by Prasar Bharati.
2. From Fashion Designer to Political Spokesperson
With a diploma from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and a political science degree from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, Shaina entered politics in 2004 by joining the BJP. She has held significant roles, including national spokesperson, national executive council member, and treasurer of BJP’s Maharashtra unit.
3. Social Activism and Charity Work
Apart from politics and fashion, Shaina is active in social work. She frequently organizes charity fashion shows and leads two NGOs, ‘I Love Mumbai’ and the ‘Giants Welfare Foundation,’ which focus on community development and welfare.
4. A Prominent TV Debater
Shaina NC has become a familiar face on television news panels, representing her party’s views and participating in discussions on current affairs, social issues, and party stances.
5. The Shift to Shiv Sena and Mumbadevi Candidacy
Initially, it was rumored that Shaina NC would contest from the Worli constituency. However, the Shiv Sena nominated her for Mumbadevi instead, while Milind Deora was fielded in Worli as the Mahayuti candidate. Her candidacy marks a notable shift, as the Mumbadevi seat, part of the Mumbai Lok Sabha, has been held by Congress’ Amin Patel since 2009.
Shaina NC’s addition to Shiv Sena was part of a broader announcement of 14 candidates for the Maharashtra assembly poll, setting the stage for intense competition in several key constituencies.
