“We have seen that things are not really functioning properly in our country; demonetisation, historical unemployment, inflation. Congress should be the party to bring change,” said Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor, after filing his nomination.

“Nomination papers I submitted reflect extraordinarily wide range of support extended voluntarily to me by party workers across India. We’ve submitted 5 forms,50 signs. We’re about to submit the 6th form before 3pm, which will take the total to 60(signs),” he added.

On October 17, the party members will choose their new leader, and the results will be made public two days later. Digvijay Singh and Ashok Gehlot withdrew from the campaign, leaving Mallikarjun Kharge as the other front-runner. Earlier in the day, Jharkhand Congress leader KN Tripathi also files nomination for the Congress President poll.

In contrast to Ashok Gehlot, who withdrew from the race after the Rajasthan crisis and had his supporters demonstrate amid rumours that Sachin Pilot would likely succeed him, Digvijaya Singh announced a day after Kharge’s confirmation that he would be Kharge’s supporter.
