New Delhi: In a significant development in the Sheena Bora murder case, the prosecution informed the trial court on Wednesday that the remains of Sheena Bora, previously reported as untraceable, have been located at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office. Sheena Bora, aged 24, was allegedly murdered in 2012 by her mother Indrani Mukerjea and accomplices.

This update came on the same day the trial court received an email stating that Sheena Bora’s bones had not been lost but were with a forensic expert who had examined the skeleton and is now testifying in the case.

Trial court judge S P Naik Nimbalkar notified the defense lawyers present in court about an email alleging that a witness in the case had suddenly acquired wealth. After reviewing the email, the defense requested an investigation into the allegation. The judge subsequently asked the central probe agency for their response.

On April 24, the prosecution had informed the court that Sheena Bora’s remains were untraceable, and reiterated this on June 10. However, the remains were later discovered in the office store. Prosecutor C J Nandode explained, “But meanwhile, again after going through the office `malkhana’ (store)… the articles i.e. the bones are (found to be) lying in the malkhana.”

The prosecution further noted that the CBI did not consider these articles as evidence because they were not referenced in the chargesheet, opting to proceed without formally documenting them. Following this revelation, the court resumed the cross-examination of the forensic expert.

Indrani Mukerjea, a former media executive and the primary accused in the murder case, is currently released on bail. Last month, after the prosecution’s statement that Sheena Bora’s remains were untraceable, Mukerjea claimed no skeleton remains were discovered in 2012, describing the narrative as a “concocted story.”

Mukerjea also suggested that Rahul Mukerjea, Sheena Bora’s fiancé, should be arrested for questioning, as he was the last person known to have seen Bora alive.

The murder, which came to light in 2015, involved Sheena Bora allegedly being strangled in a car by her mother, assisted by Indrani’s former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai, in April 2012. The body was reportedly cremated in a forest in Raigad district. Sheena Bora was Indrani’s daughter from a previous relationship.
