Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated on Wednesday that he “told the truth” to the Lokayukta police during questioning over alleged illegalities in a land allocation case involving his wife and the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA). After a two-hour session, Siddaramaiah affirmed to reporters that he had answered all questions and wasn’t asked to return for further questioning.
“The Lokayukta police questioned me, I answered truthfully, and everything was recorded and read back to me. I was falsely accused, but I told the truth,” Siddaramaiah said, adding that he hasn’t been asked to appear again.
The Lokayukta’s inquiry, according to sources, involved a comprehensive session led by three officers, covering details of the alleged irregularities. Conducted as per the Code of Criminal Procedure, the session was video recorded to ensure full transparency.
What Transpired During the Questioning?
Investigators questioned Siddaramaiah on various aspects of the land allotment case, which he answered based on his knowledge, refraining from topics he was unfamiliar with. Approximately six officers are actively involved in the investigation, with more follow-up sessions possible, for which Siddaramaiah has already provided consent.
So far, 10-15 witnesses, including the four accused, have been questioned, and the Lokayukta is expected to submit a final report by December 24.
Siddaramaiah Criticizes BJP’s Reactions
After his deposition, Siddaramaiah countered the BJP’s allegations, challenging their opposition to the inquiry ordered by the court. “Why is the BJP protesting? Are they opposing a legal investigation?” he asked.
The BJP had earlier raised objections to Siddaramaiah’s initial schedule, which allotted him time at the Lokayukta office from 10 am to 12 pm, after which he planned to attend a campaign event. The Opposition argued that the accused should not dictate the timing of their own interrogation. The Chief Minister’s schedule was subsequently adjusted.
Responding to BJP’s other criticisms, Siddaramaiah remarked: “Who controls the CBI? Has the BJP ever allowed a case to be referred to the CBI without interference? The Lokayukta is an independent agency, yet they are questioning it. Do they not respect the legal process?”
The Chief Minister faces allegations of irregularities related to the allotment of 14 sites to his wife, Parvathi B M, by MUDA, as the primary accused in the Lokayukta case.
