Hockey India has officially appointed Sjoerd Marijne of the Netherlands as the new head coach of the Indian women’s hockey team. The announcement was made on Friday, marking Marijne’s return after nearly four and a half years.
A Familiar Face Returns
Marijne previously coached the Indian women’s team from 2017 to 2021, leading them to a historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics. Although the team narrowly missed a bronze medal, their performance under his leadership won global admiration. On his reappointment, Marijne said he was thrilled to return and eager to help the team grow and play to their full potential on the world stage.
Road to World Cup Begins
Marijne will arrive in India on January 14, just ahead of the national coaching camp scheduled to start on January 19 at SAI Bengaluru. His first major challenge will be the Women’s Hockey World Cup Qualifiers, set to take place in Hyderabad from March 8 to 14, 2026.
Support Staff Strengthened
Joining him will be Matias Vila, former Argentine midfielder, as the analytical coach. Dr. Wayne Lombard also rejoins as the scientific advisor and head of athletic performance, supported by Rodet and Ciara Yila. Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey expressed gratitude to the Sports Ministry and SAI for ensuring a swift appointment to prevent any disruption in preparations.
