New Delhi, Sept 20: The Sri Lankan Navy had detained eight Indian fishermen from close to Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu for allegedly violating a maritime border, officials said on Tuesday.

The fisherman were from the state’s Pudukottai district. According to Fisheries officials, they were apprehended by the Lankan Navy late on Monday for reportedly fishing in that nation’s waters between Mullaitheevu and Neduntheevu. A single boat was also stopped.

The issue was brought up by the state BJP unit with S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs.

K Annamalai, the state president of the BJP, wrote to Jaishankar to ask for his cooperation in securing the swift return of the imprisoned fishermen. Additionally, he asked Jaishankar for assistance in reclaiming the vessels that the Sri Lankan navy had taken.
