Colombo, April 5: Gotabaya Rajapaksa told top party members on Tuesday that he will not resign as President of Sri Lanka, but that he is willing to hand over the administration to whatever party can show it has a majority of 113 seats in Parliament.
According to the Daily Mirror, Rajapaksa resumed political meetings on Monday, despite widespread public outrage about food shortages and power outages.
Parliament will meet for the first time since the public protests today, with Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena preside over a vote to decide which party has an absolute majority of 113 seats in the 225-member house.
On Sunday, 26 Sri Lankan cabinet ministers resigned en masse amid mounting public outrage over the government’s handling of the country’s economic crisis. To address the problem, President Rajapaksa invited opposition parties to join the cabinet and create a unity government.
