Los Angeles, Dec 27: After ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ in 2019, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ became the first pandemic-era film to surpass $1 billion at the global box office.

According to ‘Variety,’ the third film in Tom Holland’s trilogy achieved this feat despite the growing shadow of Omicron and the Covid-19 spike across North America and Europe, as well as the fact that it has yet to be released in the world’s largest cinema-going market, China.

It is also the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing China’s ‘The Battle of Lake Changjin’ ($902 million) and the 25th James Bond film (and Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007), ‘No Time to Die,’ which has grossed $774 million worldwide.

According to ‘Variety,’ Sony’s comic-book epic reached the billion-dollar mark in a near-record 12 days, tying it with 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as the third-fastest film to do so.

Only ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ from 2018 and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ from 2019 were faster, smashing the coveted tally in 11 and five days, respectively.

“Those are huge box office receipts at a time when several new films (such as ‘The Matrix Resurrections,’ ‘Sing 2’, and ‘The King’s Man’) are opening nationwide to notable ticket sales,” said ‘Variety’ in reporting these figures.
