Colombo, July 18: An extreme financial crisis is engulfing the island nation of Sri Lanka, and on Monday, acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe proclaimed a state of emergency as anti-government rallies continued to boil.

The election for a new president in Sri Lanka is now taking place, and the results are anticipated to be made public on July 20. Gotabaya Rajapaksa left the top constitutional position after leaving the nation last week in the wake of significant anti-Rajapaksa rallies. Rajapaksa is presently residing in Singapore, the location of protests by small groups of people calling for his expulsion.

Sri Lanka’s parliament convened on Saturday to start the presidential election process. Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is reportedly supported by the Rajapaksa family and the ruling party, Sajith Premadasa, the head of the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party, Dullas Alahapperuma, a senior legislator regarded as the presidential race’s dark horse, and Marxist JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake are among the leading candidates.
