New Delhi, July 27: A youngster in class 12 apparently committed suicide today in Tamil Nadu, adding to the string of school fatalities that have alarmed residents and sparked demonstrations.

This is the second case in less than a day and the fifth case in the past two weeks.

The young man was discovered deceased at his Sivaganga district residence. According to the authorities, he claimed in a suicide note that he couldn’t handle algebra and biology.

Before this, four schoolgirls, three of whom were in Class 12 committed suicide. A girl from Class 11 was discovered dead in Sivakasi this morning. There was no note left by suicide. Investigators claimed that the girl experienced severe, persistent stomach pains. A Class 12 student from Tiruvallur district’s Sacred Heart Girls Higher Secondary School was discovered dead at her dormitory on Monday. There was no note left by suicide.

The first of these fatalities, which was reported on July 13 in the Kallakurichi region, triggered violent protests and arson, both of which resulted in injuries. The student was discovered deceased at a residential private school.

After the police discovered a note accusing two teachers of “humiliating her for her academic performance,” five people, including the principal of the school and two teachers were detained. The girl’s parents appeared before the court and claimed that the area where she was discovered showed evidence of a violent altercation. A second autopsy was then mandated by the Madras High Court.
