Chennai, Nov 9: At least five people died, 538 huts and four houses have been completely damaged in Tamil Nadu due to incessant rains.

Meanwhile, the state’s revenue and disaster management minister KKSSR Ramachandran said that more damage is expected if rain intensifies.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted another set of heavy showers to hit the Chennai coast between November 10 and 13.

Rescue operation is underway by the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Tamil Nadu Fire and others. In Chennai , more nodal officers are posted for review and rescue operations, said the minister.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court has pulled up the Chennai corporation over the water-logging situation in the city. Questioning the corporation on what action has been taken after the 2015 floods, the HC has warned of initiating Suo moto proceedings if the situation isn’t brought under control.

Notably, Tamil Nadu received an average rainfall of 16.84 mm in the last 24 hours. With the onset of northeastern rains, Chennai received the heaviest rains in the past six years.
