Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu until December 19, owing to the vigorous Northeast monsoon. Specific districts have been placed on high alert, and advisories have been issued for residents and fishermen in affected regions.

Rainfall Forecast

•December 16: Isolated heavy rain is expected in Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal.

•December 17: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal. Other affected regions include Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Tiruchirappalli, Villuppuram, Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, Puducherry, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema.

•December 18: Cuddalore, Villuppuram, and Puducherry are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain.

•December 19: Heavy rainfall may occur in parts of Kerala.

Thunderstorm Warnings

•December 16: Thunderstorms with lightning are likely in isolated areas across Tamil Nadu.

•December 17: Thunderstorms with lightning may occur in Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema.

Advisories and Expected Impact

Flooding and Waterlogging

•Roads in urban and low-lying areas may experience localized flooding, potentially leading to disruptions in daily activities.

Traffic Disruptions

•Major cities could see slowed traffic due to waterlogged roads and the closure of underpasses.

Infrastructure Damage

•Vulnerable structures and unpaved roads may suffer minor damage.

Landslides and Mudslides

•Hilly areas face the risk of localized landslides and mudslides.

Crop Damage

•Flooding may impact standing crops and horticulture in affected districts.

River Flooding

•Certain river catchments might experience riverine flooding. Updates can be tracked on the Central Water Commission (CWC) website.

Fishermen Advisory

Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into:

•The west-central Arabian Sea on December 16 and 17.

•The Tamil Nadu coast, Comorin area, and Gulf of Mannar on December 17 and 18 due to rough sea conditions.
