New Delhi, Feb 14: At least three people were killed and five injured after a gunman opened fire at Michigan State University on Monday night as per the police. The suspect is yet to be apprehended.
According to the report in, The Michigan Daily, the first reports of the shooting came in at around 8.18 pm local time (6.48 am IST) after the Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety issued a safety alert following reports of gunshots.
In this situation, all campus activities have been cancelled for the next 48 hours. Students have been asked not to go to the campus on Tuesday. Michigan State has about 50,000 students.
The shooter appears to have targeted two areas on the campus. At 7.10 am, it was reported that shots were heard near Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus of the university. At 7.56 am, it was reported that shots were fired near IM East.
Chris Rozman, Interim Deputy Chief of the university police, said shots were fired in two locations, at an academic building called Berkey Hall and the Michigan State University Union building.
He further said in a press conference: “We received multiple 911 calls of a shooting inside Berkey Hall. Numerous officers responded. We were quickly on the scene within minutes. And there we did locate several victims of a shooting.”
“We tended to the victims at both of those scenes and there was an overwhelming law enforcement response to campus to help with this situation,” he added.
Rozman said that at least five victims were transported to the hospital, some of them with life-threatening injuries. The MSU later confirmed that three people have been killed and five others injured in the shooting.
MSU police issued an update on Twitter a short time later saying that at least three additional people had been killed. police have described the suspect as a short male with a mask, possibly Black, wearing a jean jacket and a ball cap. It is believed that there is only one shooter involved and he is on foot. Police are active on the scene.
Students, faculty and residents in surrounding off-campus neighbourhoods of East Lansing, about 90 miles northwest of Detroit, were urged by authorities to shelter in place, said the MSU police.
