Washington: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the US marked a turning point in ties with Donald Trump, as the former president signaled openness to security guarantees for Ukraine. While European leaders and NATO officials hailed the move as a breakthrough, Trump’s populist allies at home voiced sharp reservations, exposing divisions within the MAGA movement.
A Warmer Oval Office Encounter
Unlike their strained meeting earlier this year, Trump and Zelenskyy’s Washington talks projected harmony. Trump praised Zelenskyy’s demeanor, while Vice President JD Vance and other officials described the discussions as “productive.” The optics suggested a long-awaited reset for Kyiv, offering Zelenskyy both reassurance and renewed leverage in transatlantic diplomacy.
Europe and Security Frameworks
European leaders, initially skeptical, found the joint huddle with Trump constructive. Officials said the Alaska talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin helped create space for progress, paving the way for Trump’s commitment to a broader security framework for Ukraine. However, questions remain unresolved: who will fund such guarantees, whether US troops will play a role, and how long any American commitment might last.
Backlash from MAGA Voices
Conservative strategist Steve Bannon swiftly criticized the move, warning that an Article 5–style guarantee would entangle the US in an endless European conflict. On his “War Room” podcast, Bannon insisted Europe lacks the resources to sustain Ukraine without US backing and cautioned Trump against making binding security promises. His message underscored a growing rift between Trump’s pragmatic diplomacy and MAGA’s isolationist instincts.
Internal Trump World Fault Lines
Adding intrigue, Trump named JD Vance, Marco Rubio, and close confidant Steve Witkoff as coordinators on the Russia–Ukraine file. The unprecedented pairing of the vice president and secretary of state on a high-stakes foreign policy issue sparked debate over accountability. While Zelenskyy celebrated progress and Europe saw reassurance, Trump’s inner circle faces new political risks. The balancing act between avoiding foreign entanglements and asserting US leadership may test both Trump’s strategy and his coalition’s unity.
