Srinagar: In a span of 24 hours, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed two encounters resulting in the death of a soldier and the injury of another, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in the region.
On Wednesday, an Indian Army soldier was injured, and a terrorist was killed during a search operation in Kupwara’s Kowut area. The Army, in collaboration with the J&K Police, initiated the search following intelligence reports of terrorist presence in the region.
The Army reported suspicious movements on July 24, which were challenged by alert troops. The terrorists responded with indiscriminate gunfire, leading to a firefight in which one terrorist was neutralized and a non-commissioned officer (NCO) was injured. “Operation is in progress,” stated the Army.
This incident follows a deadly encounter on Tuesday in Poonch district near the Line of Control, where a soldier lost his life while thwarting an infiltration attempt. The fallen soldier, Lance Naik Subash Kumar, succumbed to his injuries after a fierce gunfight. His body has been handed over to the Army after an autopsy.
Recent months have seen a surge in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir, sparking concerns about a potential revival of militancy in the area. Security forces continue to conduct extensive search operations to prevent further infiltration and attacks.
