Baramulla: In the early hours of Tuesday morning, two successive earthquakes rattled the Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir. The first quake, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, struck at approximately 6:45 AM, followed closely by a second tremor with a magnitude of 4.8. Both earthquakes occurred at a depth of around 10 kilometers, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage in the region. Authorities remain vigilant, monitoring the situation for any further seismic activity or aftershocks that may occur.
Jammu and Kashmir, located in the seismically active Zone 5, is one of the most earthquake-prone regions in India. The area sits on the Indian tectonic plate, which is constantly pushing against the Eurasian plate, creating significant geological stress. This makes the northern and northeastern regions of India particularly susceptible to earthquakes.
The mountainous terrain and high population density in parts of Jammu and Kashmir amplify the potential for damage during such seismic events. Fortunately, in this instance, the tremors did not result in major harm.
As the region continues to experience frequent seismic activity, residents and authorities alike remain on high alert, aware of the ongoing risks posed by the area’s geological instability.
