New Delhi, Feb 8: Sudip Roy Barman and Ashish Kumar Saha, both Tripura MLAs who resigned from the Assembly and the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday, have joined the Congress on Tuesday.
Before joining Congress, the two MLAs met Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Delhi.
The party’s strength has now reduced to 33 in the 60-member Tripura Assembly.
“Many MLAs are ready but perhaps they want to wait for a few more months due to technicality. Everyone is disillusioned with the party. I feel Tripura can go to polls along with Gujarat & Himachal,” said Barman after joining the Congress.

Notably, Barman and Ashish Kumar Saha resigned from the Assembly and the ruling party’s primary membership on Monday, claiming that democracy is at risk in Tripura under the BJP. Roy Barman, a five-term MLA who was fired as health minister in 2019, and Saha delivered their resignation papers to Speaker Ratan Chakraborty, pledging to end the “plot” to silence the public’s voice under the current system.
