Notably, in December 2019 BJP government passed the Char Dham Devasthanam Management Board Bill. The law aimed at bringing the the administration of 51 temples including the Char Dham – Shri Badrinath, Shri Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri under the purview of Char Dham Devasthanam Board.

Many organizations including Char Dham Teerth Purohit Haq Hookdhari Mahapanchayat Samiti were opposing the act. According to the temple priests, their rights are being played due to the formation of this board. The agitation against the board has been going for 21 months.

Earlier, Uttarakhand High Court had dismissed two pleas challenging the validity of the said law.
