Kolkata: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has resigned from his post, triggering a political controversy in the state ahead of the expected announcement of the assembly election schedule. Bose confirmed the development while speaking to media, saying he had served as governor for three-and-a-half years and felt that was sufficient.
Resignation Sent From New Delhi
According to officials, Bose submitted his resignation to the President from New Delhi on Thursday evening. His tenure as governor was scheduled to continue until November 2027, making the sudden exit unexpected. However, Bose did not disclose the exact reasons behind his decision.
Mamata Banerjee Hints At Pressure From Centre
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reacted strongly to the development, stating she was “shocked and deeply concerned” by the governor’s sudden resignation. In a post on social media, she suggested that political pressure from the Union government might have played a role in the decision.
Banerjee said she would not be surprised if the governor had faced pressure from Union Home Minister Amit Shah in connection with the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. She also claimed Shah informed her that Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi would take additional charge as Bengal governor following Bose’s resignation.
The Chief Minister further alleged that the Centre did not consult the state government before making the decision, which she said goes against established democratic conventions and cooperative federalism.
BJP Rejects Allegations
BJP leader Samik Bhattacharya dismissed Banerjee’s claims, calling them baseless. He stated that changes in Raj Bhavan are routine and suggested Bose may have stepped down due to health reasons. He accused the Trinamool Congress of politicising the issue.
Turbulent Relationship With State Government
CV Ananda Bose assumed office as the governor of West Bengal on November 17, 2022. During his tenure, relations between Raj Bhavan—recently renamed Lok Bhavan—and the Mamata Banerjee-led government were often strained. The governor frequently criticised state policies, leading to several public disagreements with the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Resignation Ahead Of Crucial Elections
The resignation comes at a politically sensitive time, with the Election Commission expected to soon announce the schedule for the West Bengal Assembly elections. Bose has become the second consecutive Bengal governor to leave office before completing a full term, following Jagdeep Dhankhar, who resigned in 2022 after being elected Vice President of India.
